Barcelona bin, Contenur
The Barcelona bin, widely used across Spanish cities, is typically a 45-liter cylindrical waste bin placed in high-traffic pedestrian areas. One of its main challenges is its tendency to fill up quickly with bulky yet lightweight waste, such as packaging materials—requiring multiple daily collections.
The design challenge was to increase its capacity without taking up additional sidewalk space. This was achieved by extruding the bin’s shape transversely, preserving its footprint while expanding its internal volume to 89 liters.
In addition, the ashtray was redesigned with a user-centered approach. A new slot-shaped system allows cigarette butts to be removed without direct contact, enhancing both hygiene and maintenance efficiency.
This redesign offers a smart, space-efficient solution that responds directly to urban operational needs and real-world user behavior.
