Dual Prasa, Stadler

Dual Mode Locomotive for PRASA

The design work focused on the development of both the interior and exterior of the locomotive, with special emphasis on the front-end (nose section), which serves as the locomotive’s most defining visual and functional element.

The design work focused on the development of both the interior and exterior of the locomotive, with special emphasis on the front-end (nose section), which serves as the locomotive’s most defining visual and functional element.

The project aimed to create a coherent formal identity that reflects the robustness and technical performance of a dual-mode locomotive, while also integrating ergonomic and safety standards required for rail operations in passenger service environments.

A key design challenge was the configuration of the driver’s cab, particularly the control desk, which needed to accommodate a wide range of instruments while ensuring optimal visibility, reachability, and ease of use. The spatial distribution, surface inclination, and interface positioning were carefully studied to create a comfortable and intuitive driving environment.

On the exterior, the formal development of the nose sought to balance aerodynamic performance, crashworthiness, and brand expression, resulting in a design that is both functional and recognizable.

This dual-mode locomotive project demonstrates the importance of integrated design thinking, merging technical constraints, regulatory requirements, and visual coherence into a single, unified solution tailored to the operational needs of PRASA.
